This dependence has delivered extraordinary convenience, but it has also weakened certain human skills, increased psychological and social vulnerabilities and made entire societies susceptible to technological disruption. The problem is therefore not technology itself but the gradual surrender of human autonomy to it. People have indeed become overly dependent on technology where convenience replaces competence, digital connection replaces meaningful human interaction and automated systems begin to substitute rather than support human judgment.
The extent of this transformation can be observed in an ordinary day. An individual may wake to a smartphone alarm, check messages before leaving bed, use a navigation application to travel, communicate through digital platforms, work on a computer, order food online, make electronic payments and spend the evening watching algorithmically recommended entertainment. None of these activities is inherently harmful. In fact, each can make life more efficient. The concern arises from the fact that if the device, application or network suddenly disappears, many people struggle to perform tasks that previous generations considered ordinary.
Smartphones perhaps represent the clearest symbol of this dependency. The modern phone is simultaneously a camera, map, calculator, diary, entertainment system, news source, workplace and social environment. Its usefulness is undeniable, yet its constant presence has altered human habits. People check notifications during meals, meetings and conversations. Waiting for a few minutes without looking at a screen has become uncomfortable for many. Technology that was originally designed to serve attention increasingly competes to capture it.
This constant connectivity has affected human relationships as well. Communication has become faster but not necessarily deeper. A person can remain digitally connected with hundreds of people while feeling emotionally isolated. Families may sit in the same room while each member engages with a different screen. Friends may communicate continuously through brief messages yet struggle with sustained face-to-face conversation. Digital communication expands the quantity of interaction, but it can weaken its quality when it replaces rather than supplements physical presence.
Social media intensifies this problem because it transforms communication into continuous comparison. Individuals encounter carefully selected versions of other people's lives and may judge their own ordinary experiences against them. Approval becomes measurable through likes, views and followers. The desire for digital validation can gradually influence self-esteem, behaviour and even personal identity. Technology then stops being merely a means of communication and begins determining how individuals understand their own social worth.
Dependence is equally visible in human memory. People once memorized telephone numbers, addresses, routes and important dates because they could not assume immediate digital access to them. Smartphones now store this information effortlessly. Search engines allow facts to be retrieved within seconds, reducing the need to remember large quantities of information. This is not entirely negative; human beings have always used writing and external records to expand memory. The danger emerges when access to information is mistaken for possession of knowledge.
Knowing how to search for an answer is useful, but it is not identical to understanding the subject. A person who continuously relies upon search engines for basic information may possess enormous informational access while developing little intellectual depth. Knowledge provides the framework through which new information is evaluated. Without that framework, individuals become more vulnerable to misinformation because they cannot easily distinguish credible claims from confident falsehoods.
Artificial intelligence has made this question even more significant. AI systems can write emails, summarize documents, generate ideas, solve problems and assist with research. Used intelligently, these tools can dramatically increase productivity. Yet they also create a temptation to outsource mental effort. A student can ask a machine to write an assignment instead of developing an argument. A professional can accept an automated recommendation without understanding how it was reached. If such habits become widespread, technology may strengthen productivity while weakening the intellectual capacity underlying it.
This does not mean that using AI constitutes laziness. Humans have always built tools to reduce unnecessary labour. Calculators did not destroy mathematics, nor did word processors destroy writing. The important distinction is whether technology removes mechanical effort or replaces the reasoning people need to retain. Technology must support this process rather than allow students to bypass it.
Workplaces have become similarly dependent on digital systems. Automation, cloud computing and communication platforms have increased speed and coordination. Businesses can operate across continents in real time, while software performs tasks that once required large administrative teams. Yet organizations increasingly discover how vulnerable they become when systems fail. Employees may be unable to access files, process transactions or communicate with customers because procedures that once existed independently have been completely digitized.
Automation can also erode traditional skills. Pilots rely heavily on advanced flight systems, financial professionals depend upon software and factory workers increasingly supervise machines rather than perform manual processes directly. Automation generally improves efficiency and safety, but excessive dependence can create difficulties when technology malfunctions. Professionals must therefore retain enough underlying knowledge to intervene when automated systems fail.
Healthcare demonstrates both the benefits and risks particularly clearly. Modern medicine depends upon diagnostic equipment, electronic records, laboratory systems and advanced imaging technologies. These innovations save lives and improve accuracy. However, medicine must not become so technologically driven that clinicians neglect observation, communication and judgment. A machine can produce data, but interpreting a patient's condition still requires human understanding.
Banking provides another example. Digital payments and online banking have made transactions extraordinarily convenient. People can transfer money instantly, pay bills remotely and conduct business without handling cash. Yet increasing dependence upon electronic finance means outages or cyberattacks can disrupt ordinary economic life. A person whose entire financial activity depends upon a smartphone may temporarily lose access to money when technology fails.
At the level of national infrastructure, the consequences are much more serious. The problem is not simply the amount of technology used but the kind of attention technological platforms encourage.
This matters because deep thought often requires boredom, patience and uninterrupted time. Creativity frequently emerges when the mind is not continuously occupied by external stimulation. If every empty moment is filled by scrolling, individuals may lose opportunities for reflection. Technology provides endless content but can reduce the mental silence in which original thought develops.
Children are particularly vulnerable because digital habits are formed before self-control has fully developed. Devices can be useful educational tools and can give parents temporary relief, but using screens as the default response to boredom may prevent children from learning how to entertain themselves, interact socially or manage frustration. A healthy relationship with technology must therefore be taught, not assumed.
However, criticism of technological dependence should not become nostalgia for an idealized past. Earlier societies were dependent upon technologies of their own. Industrial civilization depends upon electricity, automobiles, refrigeration and modern medicine. Few people would seriously argue that humanity should abandon these advances simply to become more self-reliant. Dependence upon technology is partly an inevitable consequence of specialization and progress.
Indeed, no modern individual can personally reproduce all the systems necessary for contemporary life. People rely on engineers for electricity, farmers for food, doctors for healthcare and countless technologies they do not understand completely. Civilization itself is based upon interdependence. The relevant question is therefore not whether people depend upon technology, but whether that dependence has become excessive enough to reduce autonomy, resilience or human capability.
Technology has also liberated people from many forms of undesirable dependence. Online banking reduces the need to visit physical branches, assistive technologies provide independence to persons with disabilities and remote work can expand opportunities for those constrained by geography or family responsibilities. Digital communication allows families separated across countries to maintain relationships. Technology dependence must therefore be evaluated through outcomes rather than condemned automatically.
A useful distinction can be drawn between productive reliance and helpless dependence. Productive reliance occurs when technology improves performance while humans retain understanding, alternatives and control. Helpless dependence occurs when individuals become incapable of functioning without a tool and no longer understand the processes it has replaced. The objective should not be to reduce technology use indiscriminately but to prevent the second condition.
This requires digital literacy. People should understand not only how to use technology but how technology influences them. They should recognize how algorithms select information, how platforms monetize attention, how personal data is collected and how online misinformation spreads. Digital literacy converts users from passive consumers into informed participants.
Education should preserve foundational skills alongside technological competence. Technology should arrive after or alongside intellectual foundations rather than replace their development.
Individuals also need intentional limits. Device-free meals, periods without social media and restrictions on unnecessary notifications can restore control over attention. Such practices should not be viewed as rejection of modern life. They are comparable to healthy boundaries in any other area of consumption. People benefit most from technology when they decide when to use it rather than responding automatically whenever it demands attention.
Organizations must develop similar resilience. Businesses should maintain backup procedures, governments should protect critical systems and institutions should train employees to operate during technological disruption. A completely paperless or automated system may appear efficient until it fails without an alternative. Resilience sometimes requires maintaining apparently inefficient backup capacity.
Pakistan faces both sides of this challenge. Digital technology offers enormous opportunities to expand financial inclusion, improve government services, provide online education and connect businesses with global markets. A country with a large young population can benefit significantly from technological skills and digital entrepreneurship. Pakistan should therefore accelerate rather than fear responsible technological development.
At the same time, technological dependence can deepen inequality because access remains uneven. Urban professionals with reliable broadband, modern devices and digital skills benefit much more than citizens living in poorly connected areas. If government services become exclusively digital before universal access exists, technology can exclude the very people it is intended to serve. Digital transformation must therefore be accompanied by infrastructure, affordability and literacy.

Yet dependence itself is not proof of decline. Human civilization has always advanced by creating tools and then organizing life around them. Technology has improved health, communication, education, productivity and access to knowledge. The objective cannot realistically be a return to a pre-digital world.
The real danger begins when convenience destroys capability. Technology becomes excessive when people can no longer think without automated assistance, communicate without screens, find their way without digital maps or perform essential work when systems fail. The question is not whether humans use machines but whether machines remain servants of human purposes.
A balanced society must therefore combine technological advancement with human resilience. Education should preserve critical thinking and foundational skills, institutions should maintain contingency systems and individuals should learn to control their attention rather than surrender it to digital platforms. Artificial intelligence should extend judgment rather than replace it.
For Pakistan, this balance is particularly important. Digital transformation can overcome geographical barriers, improve public services and create economic opportunities, but only when accompanied by universal access, cyber security and digital literacy. Development should create technologically empowered citizens rather than technologically dependent ones.
Technology is one of humanity’s greatest achievements precisely because it expands what human beings can do. It becomes a problem only when human beings gradually forget what they can do without it. Progress should therefore be measured not by how completely machines take over human tasks, but by how effectively technology allows people to become more capable, informed and free.
The wisest relationship with technology is neither rejection nor surrender. It is mastery: to use technology extensively, benefit from it fully and still retain the ability to think, decide, communicate and act as human beings when the screen goes dark.
